Thank you for checking out my free step-by-step photo tutorial for the crochet Granite Stitch/Moss Stitch! Scroll down for the tutorial.

If I haven’t mentioned it yet, I love moss stitch (also known as granite stitch). It’s one of my favorite simple-yet-stunning stitches! It’s really, really easy. Moss stitch uses basic single crochets and chains to make a beautiful textured fabric. Another plus is that moss stitch helps you keep your edges straight.

Materials

I’m using an H/8 (5.00mm) hook (I’m currently using these!) and Lion Brand Yarn Heartland (colorway Mount Rainier) in this tutorial, but you could use any hook size and yarn you have on hand.

Experiment with different fibers and sizes! I think the moss stitch looks great using a lot of different yarns. πŸ™‚

How to make the Moss Stitch

1.) Chain an even number of stitches. This could be any even number, but for the purposes of this tutorial, I chained 12.

2.) Single crochet in the 4th chain from your hook.

3.) Chain 1.

4.) Skip the next chain.

5.) Single crochet in the next chain.

6.) Repeat steps 3-5 until the end of the row.

7.) Chain 2, turn.

8.) Single crochet in the 1st chain 1 space.

9.) Chain 1.

10.) Single crochet in the next chain 1 space.

11.) Repeat steps 9-10 to the end of the row.

After the first row, each single crochet is worked into a chain 1 space, followed by another chain that sets up the chain 1 space for the next row. At the end of each row, you will chain 2 and turn your work. This chain 2 acts as a chain 1 space for your next row.

You can see how your single crochet stitches will be staggered from row to row.
