Hello! Thank you for checking out the free step-by-step photo tutorial for the Double Crochet Cluster Stitch. Scroll down for the photo tutorial!
The double crochet cluster stitch (commonly abbreviated as cl, cs, or cluster) is made up of two or more double crochet stitches either made in the same stitch, or across adjacent stitches. My favorite version of the cluster stitch is when two or three stitches are worked into the same stitch – it is so simple but creates such a gorgeous fabric. That is the version of the cluster stitch that I’m going to share in this tutorial.
Since this stitch uses basic double crochet stitches, it’s really easy to learn! The stitch that I’m going to teach you uses two double crochet stitches made in the same stitch. Scroll down for the photo tutorial.
Note: Be careful with cluster stitches made in the same stitch, because too many double crochet stitches in one stitch becomes a bobble and not a cluster.
Materials
I’m using an H/8 (5.00mm) hook (I’m currently using these!) and Lion Brand Yarn Heartland (colorway Mount Rainier) in this tutorial, but you could use any hook size and yarn you have on hand.
Experiment with different fibers and sizes! I think the cluster stitch compliments a lot of different yarn types. π
How to make a Double Crochet Cluster Stitch
1.) To begin, chain 12.
2.) Yarn over and insert your hook into the 4th chain.
3.) Yarn over and draw up a loop.
4.) Yarn over again, and pull through the first two loops on your hook. At this point in a normal double crochet stitch, you would yarn over again and pull through the remaining loops on your hook to complete the stitch. However, since we are doing a cluster of two double crochet stitches, we are going to skip that step!
5.) Yarn over and insert your hook back into the same stitch. Yarn over again, and draw up a loop.
6.) Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
7.) Yarn over again and pull through all loops on your hook. Ta-da! First cluster completed.
8.) To continue making cluster stitches, yarn over and insert your hook into the next chain. Repeat steps 3-7.
9.) Repeat in the remaining chains.
Once you get to the end of the row, you chain and turn as you would normally.
10.) At the end of the row, chain 2 and turn.
11.) Yarn over and insert your hook into the first stitch of the row. Repeat steps 3-7.
12.) Cluster in each stitch of the row.
See? The cluster stitch is easy peasy! As with everything, practice makes perfect. If you try this stitch, let me know how it goes! Share with me on Instagram @SarahFaithCrafts.
Happy stitching!
