This earwarmer was made while watching Lord of the Rings with my fiance, hence the name! I made this start to finish before the movie was over, so it is a very quick and easy project! Perfect for gifts or markets. It’s worked flat and sewn together at the end, either with a straight seam or a twist seam. Personally, I prefer the twist π
The texture of this earwarmer is soft and stretchy – I love the effect of alternating half double crochet stitches with slip stitches used in this pattern. The result is a kind of wavy, puffy half double crochet stitch, and it’s so pretty! And extra warm thanks to the bulky yarn used.

Materials Needed:
- Size US M13 β 9.00mm crochet hook (I useΒ theseΒ and theseΒ glitter hooksΒ β theyβre awesome!)
- One 106yd/6oz skein ofΒ Lion Brand Yarn Wool-Ease Thick & QuickΒ (I used Claret for the twist version and Pumpkin for the flat version)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Gauge:
4β³ x 4β³ = 9 rows x 8 sts
Measurements:
18″ length, 4.5″ width. Fits an adult head.
Abbreviations (US):
- ch = chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- slst = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Pattern:
Note: Turning chain does not count as a stitch in this pattern.
Ch 10.
Row 1: HDC in 2nd ch from hook, then alternate [1 slst, 1 hdc]. Repeat [] to end of row. Ch 1, turn. (9 sts)
Row 2-39: HDC in base of turning ch, then alternate [1 slst, 1 hdc]. Rep [] to end of row. Ch 1, turn.
Tie off yarn leaving a long tail.
Flat Seam
Match the ends of the earwarmer together so that each stitch from row one lines up with each stitch of the last row. Using the tail of the yarn, sew each stitch across together. Tie off yarn and weave in ends.
Twist Seam
Match the ends of the earwarmer together (like in an interlocking C shape) as shown below:
Make sure that the stitches from each end align, and then sew through each stitch (as pictured above – the needle is through both ends). Once you’re done sewing, tie off your yarn and weave the ends in. Flip the earwarmer so that the seam is on the inside.
