Hi everyone! Happy New Year!
January in Ohio is pretty bleak and blustery and just darn COLD. So to fight the cold, I made a thick and cozy ribbed hat using Lion Brand Yarn’s Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. It’s so warm, took under 2 hours to make, and it’s extra long so the brim can be folded over your ears to make them extra cozy!
This hat is crocheted flat instead of in the round, with rows worked horizontally and seamed together at the edges so the ribbing is vertical when worn. The top of the hat is closed by weaving your yarn tail through each row and closing like a drawstring. I chose to do a half double crochet back loop only rib for this hat. HDC BLO ribbing just works so well with LBY Wool-Ease Thick & Quick – it’s so squishy and soft!

Materials Needed:
- Size US M13 โ 9.00mm crochet hook (I useย theseย and theseย glitter hooksย โ theyโre awesome!)
- 1 (or 2) 106 yard skeins of Lion Brand Yarn Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (I used Granite and Oatmeal)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Thread (for sewing on detachable pompoms)
- Faux Fur Pompoms (I use these!)
Gauge:
4″x4″ = 4 rows x 8 sts in Half Double Crochet ribbing
Abbreviations (US):
- ch = chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- blo = back loop only
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Stitches Used:
- Half Double Crochet Back Loop Only Rib
HDC BLO how-to:
1.) Make base chain. HDC in 4th st from hook. HDC the rest of the row. Ch 2, turn.
2.) Yarn over, insert hook into the back loop of the 2nd st and draw up a loop.
3.) Yarn over again, pull through all 3 loops on hook.
Pattern Note:
I made my hat to fit my 22″ head – for me, a comfortable fit is a hat with a 19″ circumference. This means my hat is 19 rows, because the gauge is 1 row per inch. You can measure the circumference of your head and adjust accordingly. My hat took one full skein of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick with not a lot left to spare, so if you need to make a wider or longer hat, you will need 2 skeins instead of 1. If you want to make the hat shorter with less of a foldy brim, you just need to make your base chain shorter. My base chain is 24 sts, which is about 12″. You can make it any length you want – this hat is super adjustable. Just make sure to add an extra 2 chains to your base stitch to form the 1st stitch of row 1.
Pattern:
Ch 26 for 24 sts
Row 1: Hdc in 4th st from hook, hdc in each st across. Ch 2. Turn.
Row 2: Hdc blo in 2nd st of row. Hdc blo in each st across. Ch 2. Turn.
Repeat row 2 for a total of 19 rows, or 17 more times.
Line up edges horizontally; you should be seaming row 1 to the last row. Seam edges together.
Weave tail through the end of each row & pull to close.
Your closure at the top will look like the following:
Sew on pompom or detachable pompom base.
Voila! Your hat is finished.
