Free Crochet Pattern: Cotton Candy Hat

Hi guys!

Here’s another free crochet pattern to help you stay warm this winter! We’ve officially had snow this month already, and I’ve been wearing this hat almost everyday.

It’s made with LBY Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, so it works up in under an hour, and it’s beginner-friendly. Not to mention the bright colors make the cold gray outside a bit more enjoyable (at least for me!). Another thing I love about this hat – I found snap-on pom-poms on Amazon and I LOVE THEM. So if I drop my hat on the slushy ground, I can wash it and wash the pom-pom separately! It’s amazing.

Materials Needed:

Measurements:

Brim measures 14″ in length not stretched, width 2.25″; stretches to 23″ in length

Finished hat measures about 7.25″ from top of hat (without pompom) to bottom of brim and fits a head circumference of 20-23″.

Abbreviations (US):

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • slst = slip stitch
  • sk = skip

Pattern Notes:

  • Keep slip stitches loose while working the brim. This helps add stretchiness to the brim.
  • All stitches in the brim and body of the hat are made in back loop only (BLO).
  • Turning chains do not count as stitches in the brim, and chain 2 at round beginnings do not count as stitches in the body of the hat.
  • If you need to make the hat longer, add a third (or fourth, etc.) row of double crochet to the body of the hat.

Pattern:

Brim:

Ch 6.

Row 1: Slst in 2nd st from hook. Slst across. Ch 1, turn. (5 sts)

Rows 2-45: Slst into 1st st. Slst across. ch 1, turn. (5 sts)

After row 45, join ends of brim together. Then, to set up for the hat body, slst into each row (45 sts).

Hat Body:

Round 1-2: Ch 2. DC around until last st. Slst to top of ch 2 from beginning of round. (44 sts; not counting ch 2 as a st)

Round 3: Ch 2. *DC next 2tog, DC*. Repeat ** until last st. You should end on DC2tog. Slst to top of ch 2. (29 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2. DC2tog until last st, DC 1. Slst in top of ch 2. (15 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2. DC all sts, slst in top of ch 2.

Tie off yarn, leaving a long tail.

Finishing:

Weave tail through top of remaining stitches, pull to close. (Drawstring close).

Using a needle and thread (or a lighter weight of yarn), sew the pom-pom snap on top of the drawstring close cinch. Snap the pom-pom on. Or if you are not using a snap on pom, sew your pom-pom to the top of the hat.

Weave in ends.

I hope you enjoy this pattern! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

    1. Hi Lisa!

It should work if you measure the circumference of their head, subtract 4″ for a snug fit (this hat is pretty stretchy), and then work the brim flat for however many inches. For example, for a 16″ circumference noggin, work the brim flat until it measures 12″. Then sew the ends together and follow the pattern. Hope that helps! πŸ™‚

  1. Thanks so much for the pattern I haven’t tried many I’m fairly new at this but I plan to to try this one thanks again so much! You make it so easy to follow thank you again!
