Have you seen crochet items with puff hearts floating around the internet this time of year? Me too. I LOVE THEM! So I decided to take a stab at a hot pad design that will get your kitchen ready for Valentine’s Day. <3

I had a few balls of Lily Sugar N Cream and Lion Brand Re-Up lying around from Christmas in red and white (the official color is called Ecru), so I bought a ball of Lily Sugar N Cream in Rose Pink and got to work on this Valentine’s Day pattern.

I found puff hearts to be a bit tricky to make, and I’ve been obsessed with the moss stitch lately, so I decided to make this hot pad using rows of moss stitch and inserting the puff hearts into the chain one spaces. This will make more sense below – I made a photo tutorial to help with the explanation. I love how it turned out!

Pattern:

Ch 26 in color 1.

ch 26

Row 1: Sc in the 4th st from hook. *Ch 1, sk next st, sc.* Repeat * until end of row. You should end on a sc. [Note: If you are using multiple colors (which I recommend, it’s super cute), finish the last sc of the row with your contrasting color, ie. color 2.] Ch 2, turn.

Row 2: Sc in 1st ch 1 space, ch 1, *puff st, ch 1, puff st, ch 2 in next ch 1 space, sc in next ch 1 space, ch 1.* Repeat * until last two ch 1 spaces in row. You should have 5 puff hearts, and finish the row with one sc each in the last two ch 1 spaces of the row. Ch 2, turn.

Row 3: Sc in 1st ch 1 space, ch 1, *sc in ch 1 space, ch 1.* Repeat * across. For this row, ch 1 spaces are before and after the puff heart sts. You should end on a sc. Switch to color 3, ch 2, turn.

Row 4: Sc in 1st ch 1 space, ch 1, *puff st in ch 1 space between puff heart from row 2, ch 1, puff st in same ch 1 space, ch 2, sc in next ch 1 space, ch 1* Repeat * until last two ch 1 spaces of row.

Row 5: Sc in 1st ch 1 space, ch 1, *sc in ch 1 space, ch 1.* Repeat * across. For this row, ch 1 spaces are before and after the puff heart sts. You should end on a sc. Switch to color 1, ch 2, turn.

Repeat rows 4 and 5 alternating colors every 2 rows for a total of 23 rows. I ended using Re-Up in Red.

To finish, moss stitch border around all sides of the hot pad. Before tying off yarn, ch 10 and slip stitch into corner to make a loop to hang the hot pad.
