I’m so excited to share this pattern with you. It’s the first pattern I wrote specifically for my little blog. It’s beginner friendly and it’s a good introduction to working with one of my favorite textured stitches!
I was inspired to make these coasters by a giant mug that was given to me as a gift by one of my best friends. None of my store bought coasters (as cute as they are) are big enough for the base of the mug to sit on! I decided to remedy the situation myself, and voila, my bobble stitch coasters were born!
As I mentioned above, this pattern is extremely beginner friendly and only uses three stitches (double crochet, and bobble stitch made of treble crochet clusters). These little guys take almost no time to make as well – you could even make them over the time span of a few episodes of the Netflix show you’re currently binge watching. All you need is a few hours to kill, cotton yarn (preferably weight 4; I recommend Lily Sugar’n Cream yarn!), a size H/8 crochet hook, and your trusty crafting scissors.
Materials Needed:
- Size H/8 – 5.00 mm crochet hook.
- 2 skeins Lily Sugar’n Cream Super Size Cotton Yarn in any color.
- Scissors.
- Yarn needle (optional).
Gauge:
15 sts and 9 rows = 4.5″
Abbreviations (US):
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Bobble Stitch How To:
Yarn over twice, and insert hook into next stitch.
Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook.
Yarn over once more and pull through the next two loops on the hook.
There should be two loops left on your hook. To make a treble crochet, you would yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. However, the bobble stitch in this pattern is made up of clusters of 5 treble crochets worked in the same stitch, then pulled together (tc5tog). Repeat the steps above in the same stitch 5 times. Do not pull through the remaining loops until there are 6 loops on the hook.
You should have 6 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.
Ta-da! Treble bobble stitch complete!
Pattern:
Ch 17.
Row 1: Dc in 4th st from hook, then dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2: Dc in 2nd st, *bobble st in next st, dc in next st, bobble st. Repeat * until last 2 sts in row. Dc in last 2 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 3: Dc in 2nd st from hook, then dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.
Row 4: Dc in 2nd st, *bobble st in next st, dc in next st, bobble st. Repeat * until last 2 sts in row. Dc in last 2 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 5: Dc in 2nd st from hook, then dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.
Row 6: Dc in 2nd st, *bobble st in next st, dc in next st, bobble st. Repeat * until last 2 sts in row. Dc in last 2 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 7: Dc in 2nd st from hook, then dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.
Row 8: Dc in 2nd st, *bobble st in next st, dc in next st, bobble st. Repeat * until last 2 sts in row. Dc in last 2 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 9: Dc in 2nd st from hook, then dc in each st across.
Finishing:
Tie off yarn and cut tails to about 1″ in length if you are adding a fringe. If you are adding a fringe, cut 30 2″ pieces of your cotton yarn and loop through the bottom of each st on the first and last rows. For a set of 4 coasters, you will need 120 little fringe pieces.
If you are not adding a fringe, tie off yarn and weave in ends.
Let me know if there are any questions or concerns you have with this pattern.
I can’t wait to see your very own bobble stitch coasters!
